More than 600,000 liters of oil from scrap yards that operate illegally could be contaminating land and water in the North West of England each year, this is according to the Environment Agency.
They today called on members of the public to ensure that they scrap there car with an approved treatment facility, this is done by checking they have the necessary permit.
Every car on the road contain dangerous and polluting fluids and parts that could cause long term damage to the environment.
Items that could cause damage are petrol, oil, coolant, tyres and the airbag. Fluids could leak into water which could then possible leak into the drains causing pollution and damage to wild life. Plastics and tyres give off toxic fumes when set alight.
It is estimated that 81,881 cars are handled by illegal scrap yards in the North West each year. Dismantling scrap vehicles containing hazardous substances carries a maximum penalty of upto 20,000.
Sell us your car are a fully approved collection and treatment facility in disposing vehicles, our advice is to come to us beaware of other companies out there. If in any dought ask them for there ATF Number then call the Environment Agency.
